As a young married man, Amos moved to Bennington, VT. Here he was a builder of improved Russian stoves. He also collected tax revenue. Probably most importantly, he taught at "Clio Hall" in Bennington. Clio Hall was the first literary institution ever incorporated in Vermont and was then the most distinguished institution of the State. Amos Marsh, along with Rev. Win. Haskley and Rev. John Swift, D.D. taught a classical course at the school. Hon. J.D. Farnsworth was a student of theirs who came to fame as a physician and attorney.
Amos & Abigail may have had a son, Henry Marsh, since one of his grandsons was named Henry Marsh Hine. Also, there is a possibility they had a son, Allen, since there was an Allen Marsh living in Bennington in 1812 who was a builder of Russian stoves which is what Amos had done before becoming a respected teacher, lawyer and politician.
This Amos Marsh was appointed by President George Washington to be District Attorney of VT in 1794. He moved his family to Vergennes, Addison Co., VT Abt. 1792, for there is a record indicating he was a voter in Vergennes in that year.
HISTORY OF ADDISON COUNTY, CHAPTER X, page 159
"Amos Marsh came to Vergennes about 1795 and speedily obtained distinction as a man of learning and ability. He was born in New Milford, CT, September 8, 1764. He was a member of the Legislature in 1796 and several years following; three years he was speaker of the House. He died at Saratoga Springs January 4, 1811, and was buried in Vergennes cemetery."
In Vergennes, Amos served as Justice of the Peace and was later, in 1807, considered its mayor. Amos became a member of the Legislature in 1796, serving for several years. He became Speaker of the House in VT (1799 - 1802). Amos ran on the Federalist ticket for northeastern VT and was elected as a U.S. Rep. from 1802 -1810. He died while he was in Saratoga Springs, NY, at age 46 in 1811. He was brought back to Vergennes and buried at Old Cemetery. Apparently, longevity was not in the gene pool, for his daughters, too, died as young mothers and he had several grandchildren who died in their 20's and 30's.
In a book on genealogy of the Hartwell Family of America, it states that Thomas W. Rich, who graduated from Dartmouth in 1799, studied law with Judge Marsh at Vergennes, VT, later practicing in Monkton, VT. Later in life, Thomas came back to Vergennes to run a motel.
