Elihu lived in Mansfield, New Fairfield, and lastly, New Milford, CT. Elihu was also known as Elisha. There was an Eilisha Marsh who was ordained as pastor of the Separatist Church which had been newly formed in Windham in 1747. This Elisha was said to be mild tempered and the church never grew or became vigoruous. It soon fell apart. This could very well have been Elihu who also went by the name, Elisha. Elihu's son, John, was born in Windham in 1749. Elihu lived at New Fairfield from about 1753 - 1760. He may have moved to New Milford Abt. 1760.
On May 20, 1762, during the second reign of King George III, 23 petititioners headed by Daniel Prindle were granted 23,000 acres on the Hudson River west of Kingsbury Twp. This land became known as the Queensbury Patent (location not known). Elihu & Elihu, Jr. owned 5 lots in this patent -- lots 30, 74, 80, 81 & 85. The Prindle group did not intend to settle here, but they in turn either sold or rented to the Quakers. It is wondered whether Elihu's brothers, Jacob & Amos & families, had briefly settled here before moving on north to Clarendon, VT, around 1870. We do know that Jacob's son, Wm., was born at Shaftsbury in 1867.
At that time, the religious society called the Separatists of the Strict Congregational Church was being organized at New Milford and Elihu was set over this church as Elder for many years. He was this church's preacher. However, he was never ordained as its pastor. By 1812, this church was pretty much dissolved.
He purchased 25 acres of land in the New Milford area in 1765 from the heirs of his brother John who apparently lived in Dover, NY, prior to his death. It is said that later Wanzer Marsh lived on this property near Merryall which is on the West Aspentuck River. In 1769 Elihu purchased 170 acres along both sides of the Rocky River at New Milford and in the same year bought property on the west side of Candlewood Mountain which had a dwelling house on it. In 1770 he procured another 86 acres on the Rocky River. His home was in the settlement called Jerusalem which was part of N. Milford. Jerusalem probably no longer exists since the area may have been flooded to create Candlestick Lake.
It is said that Elihu also bought property on both sides of the Aspetuck River (New Milford area) which was occupied by his descendants for may years. This property was originally bought by Elihu's Uncle Matthias. After passing through several hands, it was purchased by Elihu and owned by his descendants for many years.
I have seen a claim by James Barnett that Elihu died at S. Killingly. That is where his sister and husband lived, the Rev. Eliphalet Wright family.
