Duke of Northumberland, was the virtual ruler of England from 1549 to 1553. He became influential during the later part of Henry VIII's reign because of his military skill and was elevated to the nobility in 1542. He was one of the councilors named by Henry to rule during the minority of Edward VI, who inherited the crown in 1547. Initially, Dudley acquiesced in the assumption of power by the protector, Edward Seymour, duke of Somerset, but in 1549 he overthrew Somerset and later ordered his execution. Dudley, who became duke of Northumberland in 1551, never assumed the title of protector and owed his authority to his position as president of the council. When Edward died in 1553, Northumberland attempted to divert the succession to his own daughter-in-law, Lady Jane Grey, but failed. Edward's half sister Mary Tudor (see Mary I) succeeded to the throne, and Northumberland was executed for treason. Stanford E. Lehmberg Bibliography: Brown, D. JOHN DUDLEY (1502-1550) he married his son LORD GUILDFORD DUDLEY to LADY JANE GREY who was proclaimed Queen on EDWARD VI's death. LADY JANE reigned only nine days before MARY wrested the crown from her and executed LADY JANE. It is said that only the Howard family lost more heads to the wrath of British monarchs than did the Dudleys.
He was first created Viscount Lisle, then Earl of Warwick, and after being appointed lord high admiral, reached his dukedom in 1551. He effected a marriage between his son, Lord Guildford Dudley, and Lady Jane Grey, daughter of the Duke of Suffolk. He afterwards prevailed on the young king, Edward, to set aside his sisters, Mary, and Elizabeth, from the succession in favour of Lady Jane, whom he caused to be proclaimed at the king's death. But an insurrection being raised in favour of Mary, she was proclaimed in London, and the Duke was executed as a traitor, in 1553.
