Said to have been raised by his brother James who was 24 when he was born.
He was a brilliant engineer who by the time of WW I was a consulting engineer in both mechanical and civil (construction) engineering. I [Ruly] have a picture of him with King Leopold of Belgium observing a machine he designed to clean the shrapnel and unexploded shells from the Belgian battlefields. When I was about 15 I had in my hand a 2-wheeled roller skate of which he had a couple of copies made. Today it's called a roller blade but grandfather never marketed his. During WW2 as a consultant to an upstate NY manufacturer, he designed the hydraulic lifts the navy used to bring planes up to the flight deck. I have a list of his 14 inventions-the roller skate was not listed
