[5992]
Amos Marsh, Jr. was born August 2, 1767 at Mansfield, Connecticut, son of Amos Marsh and Abigail (Dimock) Marsh. He died August 22, 1842 at Hermon, New York. He married. 1/ Abigail Wales, daughter of Roger and Esther (Brewster) Wales on February 15, 1796 at Weybridge, Vermont. She died about a year later, probably without issue 2/ Abigail Olin in 1798 daughter of Justin and Sarah (Dwinnell) Olin. She was born April 1, 1772, probably at Shaftsbury, VT, and died January 10, 1830 at DeKalb (now Hermon), NY 3/ Cynthia Gillet in 1836 who may have been the widow of Eli Sheldon. She may have died in 1845.
Amos Marsh, Sr. (1719-1778)
In 1769, when Amos Jr. was only two years of age, his parents left Connecticut to settle in the Clarendon, Vermont area where his father, Amos Sr., uncle, Jacob Marsh, and cousin, Daniel Marsh, had all purchased land. Shortly after their arrival, trouble began to brew in this area regarding land grants. The states of New York and New Hampshire were both selling land grants for the same property to two different people. The Marshes purchased their land grants from New York. One can imagine the anger that ensued as each family discovered that their property was also owned by another family who had bought their property through the other state. The Marshes found themselves in this messy state of affairs. Ethen Allen and Green Mountain Boys were in opposition to those who held the NY land grants, making life extremely difficult for the Marshes and others holding the NY grants.
The Revolutionary War came on the heals of the land disputes in Vermont, and one might say that the 1770's proved to be the worst times in the history of Vermont. Men had to choose which side to support during the war (British or American), and for many it was not an easy decision. I believe that was true for Amos Marsh, Sr. Most of the Marshes were loyal to the British (Loyalists or Tories), but it appears that Amos may have wavered in his allegiance. In Vermont, most of the men who had bought NY grants became Loyalists, and those having New Hampshire grants supported the American side. Amos Marsh, Sr. signed the Oath of Allegiance to the American side in 1777. In the book, CONNECTICUT MILITARY RECORDS 1775-1848, it says that Amos Marsh was inducted into military service on the American side on April 12, 1777, serving at Piekskill, NY, and his discharge date was May 27, 1777. However, he and his son, Shubael, appear to have joined the Queen's Loyal Rangers (British side) about July of that same year. Amos's descendants who attained DAR status claim that Amos served in Colonel Noadiah Hooker's Regiment, Captain Lachem Case's Company in 1777 and was also at White Plains, Fishkill, and Fort Montgomery, NY. Amos's great granddaughter, Abby Stuart Marsh, stated that Amos and his son, Shubael, lost their lives in a British Camp at Bennington. However, probate records indicate that Amos died September 15, 1778, which is a year after the Battle of Bennington. Shubael is not mentioned as an heir in Amos's probate records, so it is believed he had probably died prior to his father's death and perhaps at Bennington.
Amos Marsh, Jr. (1767 - 1842)
Amos Marsh, Jr. was about 11 years of age when his father died and would have spent his entire boyhood years during these very troubled times. After the death of his father, young Amos and his brother, William were assigned a guardian, Amos Robinson. About in 1881, Amos Marsh's mother, Abigail, married Ebenezer Howard.
In 1788, Amos turned 21 and moved to Weybridge, Vermont. He was found there as early as December 5, 1888 when he purchased land for 45 pounds. The acreage of this property is not known. He also purchased 44 1/2 acres at Weybridge on the west bank of Otter Creek (NE corner of lot 38) from Joseph McKee on October 31, 1889 for 14 pounds. Weybridge became organized in 1789 and in 1791, 175 people lived there.
Amos had extensive business dealings with Samuel Meeker, the first settler of Weybridge who arrived in 1787. Samuel had built a dam across Otter Creek at the lower falls and also built a saw mill there. Later, Samuel's daughter married Walter Marsh, a nephew of Amos.
In addition to farming, it is possible that Amos was involved with his brother, Israel Marsh, in the grist-mill business at Weybridge. Israel erected a new grist mill in 1811.
All of Amos and Abigail (Olin) Marsh's nine children were born at Weybridge, Vermont. They were: Daniel, Horatio, Hannah, Henry (Harry), Asa, Lydia, Laura, Sarah (Sally), and Abigail. All of the children were mentioned by name as heirs in deeds when they sold their father's property after his death in 1842.
The Amos Marsh family was still living at Weybridge, VT, during the 1820 federal census, but moved that same year to DeKalb, St. Lawrence Co., NY. The town of DeKalb changed its name to Depeau on April 17, 1830 and again on February 28, 1834, the name was changed to Hermon. The Marshes probably lived about one mile south of town in the hamlet of "Marshville" named after Amos Marsh. In an old deed, there is reference made to a rock located there and engraved with "A.M. 1837."
There are several deeds indicating that Amos Marsh purchased various pieces of property in the Hermon, NY, area. He bought property from Abram Frisk who had built the second saw mill about in 1826 in Marshville, which was situated on Elm Creek. On this same property, Amos built and ran a grist mill with his sons. Son, Horatio, later became proprietor of the mill. It is unclear whether the Marshes also ran the sawmill that had belonged to Frisk. There is a reference to Marsh's mills in a deed. So they may have owned and run both. In a history of the area, it is said that these mills subsequently burned.
Some of Amos's children had left Hermon, NY, before his death. Daniel's family had gone to Rochester, NY, Harry's family settled in Michigan and Asa had moved to Jeffersonville, Indiana, probably as a single man. After their father's death in 1842, the rest of the children also left the area. At some point, Lydia's family had moved to Indiana. By 1850, sisters Hannah, Laura, and Abigail and their families were living next to one another at Hartland, Niagra, NY. A sister and brother of their mother, Abigail, along with their families had moved to Hartland around 1815, but they had died in 1843 and 1842, respectively. So it is not known whether the aunt and uncle or any of their children were instrumental in the Marsh girls and their families making the move to Hartland, NY. By the late 1850's the last of Amos's children, Horatio and his sister, Sarah, and their families moved from Hermon, NY, to the Austin, Minnesota area. By this time their brother, Asa & family, were also living in Austin where Asa was a Baptist minister. In 1860, Asa & family moved to the next county south to Riceville, Mitchell, Iowa, where he pastored the First Baptist Church for eleven years until his health failed him. The three sisters and families who were at Hartland, NY, in 1850 were probably members of First Baptist Church of Hartland which was built in 1833.
The Marsh family were Baptists. Two of their sons, Horatio and Asa, were Baptist ministers. In a genealogy book on the Edmunds Family, the author stated that Amos Marsh was also a Baptist minister. I am not sure whether this is fact. However, since two sons were ministers, it gives the claim more credence. On June 19th & 20th, 1799, there was an Elder Amos Marsh who attended an Ecclesiastical Council (a Baptist convention) held in Monkton, Addison, VT. It was said that this Amos Marsh was from Cornwall, VT. This could very well be our Amos since Cornwall was the next town south of Weybridge and may have been the church's meeting place.
Amos Marsh apparently owned considerable land in the Hermon area. Following his death, his heirs sold at least seven parcels of land between 1843 - 1853.
Amos and Abigail Marsh both died at Hermon, New York and are buried at the Marshville Cemetery. His tombstone is barely legible, and no stone can be found for Abigail. The cemetery has few stones; and because of the age of the cemetery, the existing tombstones are in poor condition.
Note: Anne Cady has walked many cemeteries in St. Lawrence County recording information on tombstones and taking photos of headstones. A headstone photo and death information from the Marshville Cemetery south of Hermon, NY, for Amos Marsh can be found on Internet.
