I am committed to the investigation, development and application of improved
ways of helping students learn physics and develop scientific reasoning. In
conjunction with practicing teachers and a College of Education faculty
member, I have been developing and evaluating a special class for
pre-service elementary teachers - people who are critical for cultivating an
interest in science learning in children. The course we have been
developing has served as a model for the type of course we hope preservice
teachers will be taking and as a model for inservice workshops for
practicing teachers in Appalachia in the $22 million dollar, five year
National Science Foundation grant, Appalachian Science and Mathematics
Partnership. On this grant, I will be serving as Director of the Preservice
Teachers Component, Co-director of the evaluation component, and a
contributor to other science components.
