Students with an interest in doing independent research with a faculty member in physics or astronomy may enroll in PHY 395 or AST 395 for 1, 2 or 3 credits. In some cases the student will identify the faculty mentor and together they will come to agreement on an appropriate topic for study. Alternately, the student should meet with the Director of Undergraduate Studies to discuss their area of general interest, and the DUS will assist in identifying a faculty mentor and research topic.
May be repeated to a maximum of 12 credits. Prereq: Major standing and a GPA of 3.0 in the department.
After finding a mentor and topic, the student and faculty member

and submit it to the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
Note that students who want to enroll in PHY or AST 395 must both register for one to three hours of 395 credit as well as submit a Learning Contract to the DUS. The submission of a Learning Contract does not in itself provide automatic registration for the course.
