Colloquium
When the load on a cracked solid is increased, the crack can start to grow
and the material will break. This talk will address basic questions of
how the crack starts to grow, how
it progresses, and where it goes. The onset of growth is a type of
non-equilibrium phase transition, the dynamics involves new propagating
modes in the material and the crack path determines the shape
of the fracture surfaces left after the material has broken.
