My dissertation was written using AMSLaTeX and a modification of the ucthesis document class style. The history of the ucthesis document class style, that I'm aware of, is that Chris Martin (UCSB) modified it to conform to the UC standards, and then John Whelan (UCSB) ported it to LaTeX2e. John Whelan also implemented some modifications, some of which I've since modified. There is some documentation at the header of the file ucthesis.cls, listing the modifications/features.
