The primary satisfaction I derive from teaching is meeting, talking
with, and working with students who share my interest in the exploration
of natural phenomena. Whether their interest in nature stems from a
casual curiosity, from a professional "need to know," or from a
lifelong habit of study, the people I meet through teaching continually
inspire me to find simpler explanations, more precise descriptions,
and better paradigms for interpreting fundamental properties of
our world. The diversity of experiences, goals, and expectations of the
people who attend my courses makes effective teaching a challenging
intellectual enterprise that I have not mastered, but in which I am
actively, and joyfully engaged.
