String theory and tachyons

We shall review the general formalism of string theory, and its role in the search for a unified theory of gravity and other interactions in nature. We shall also discuss how during the last decade, the five apparently different consistent string theories have come to be regarded as different limits of a single underlying theory, known as M-theory. In the last part of the talk we shall explore the role of negative mass2 particles, known as the tachyons, which appear in many places in the study of string theory.
