Black Holes, Cosmic Rays, and Extra Dimensions

High energy cosmic rays may produce tiny black holes, which could be detected by existing cosmic ray observatories. The scenarios in which these events might occur involve additional space dimensions. The fact that no black holes have yet been observed leads to new lower limits on the size of these dimensions and on the energy scale at which the quantum mechanical aspects of gravity become important.
