Tim's Astronomical Review - Part Deux

Tim Knauer

Astronomers desire an accurate, permanent and objective record of the sky. These are not always compatible goals. The human eye is not only an observing tool with many shortcomings for exact and quantitative measurements; human eyes can differ substantially across a sample of 1 astronomer. Photoelectric cells replaced naked-eye observing, which in turn was supplanted by photographic materials. A CCD is an array of photoelectric cells, with the ability to store photo-electrons. The state of the art is reviewed from 1571 to the present. Absolutely new historical connections are announced. (You'll have to attend to read the astro-poem.) A real CCD camera will be on display - not guaranteed to work. Bring your lunch and your No-Doze.
