He was summoned to Parliment by writ as "Johanni de Sutton de Duddeley militi" from 15 February 1439/40 to September 1485. He served in the wars in France, and was made a knight of the Order of the Garter before 23 April 1459. He was made constable of the Tower of London in 1473.
