PROKARYOTES: cells without a special center or nucleus (can make proteins and reproduce without the need of a plant or animal host --- the simplest known biological systems capable of independent life). EUKARYOTES: cells that contain nucleus appeared about 1--2 billion years ago. They keep their DNA structures within the nucleus.
