Summary

Thus, the measurement of the $\pi ^-p\rightarrow \gamma \gamma n$ branching ratio and its energy angle dependence, can provide a deeper understanding of the pion nucleon interactions from several important perspectives. There has been considerable interest in this elementary reaction for quite some time, even though the branching ratio and the energy-angle distributions had not yet been measured. Therefore our measurement of double radiative capture mode of pionic hydrogen has been timely and of topical interest.

In the following chapters, we describe the set-up of our experiment and the trigger and acceptance studies leading to the final measurement.
