Here are some things to think about and do as we start this unit
on thermal expansion.
Make a list of all the thermometers you have in your house, your
car, your workplace. There are lots more than you realize at first, to protect
things from getting too hot or too cold.
Many are hidden inside some device (for example, your toaster has to figure
out when to pop, and most use a temperature sensor).
When possible, look inside to see what the actual thermometer looks like,
and try to classify them into various types.
No doubt you have noticed that occasionally your water pipes
or heating system starts making regular noises -- "tic ... tic ...
tic ... tic" or "clunk ... clunk ... clunk". When does this happen?
What's going on?
As part of your discussion, write something in your journal about your
answers to some of these questions -- what you decided, which questions
you were sure of, which ones don't seem to make sense.
