Discussion of the section on
thermal energy
Here are some things to do to finish this section.
Did you think of a question that could be studied, or make an observation
that was interesting or unexpected? You should send it to the
Question
board!
Discuss these questions with the people in your group:
The temperature of deserts varies very strongly from day to
night; it varies somewhat in inland places; it varies very little
near large bodies of water. What role is played by these factors:
radiation --
convection --
conduction --
change of phase --
the differing ability of different materials to store thermal energy --
In most houses, hot water is prepared ahead of time and stored in
a tank. This isn't very efficient -- you are keeping the water hot all
night and all day and while you are attending the State Teachers' Meeting.
There are systems that turn on when you turn on the hot water
faucet and heat the water as you use it. Why
don't we put one of these in the basement instead?
Please send
us your discussions of two
of these questions -- the one you are most sure about and the one you are
least sure about (and tell us which is which!). Don't forget to tell us
who is in the group.
In addition to sending your discussion
of the questions, please write something in your journal
about this question:
4.Consider the extent to which your workshop learning carries over into your classroom:
a) How does the content that you have been learning in this workshop relate to your classroom
teaching? Be specific about units or lessons (or concepts/principles) and how you have used your
new knowledge in your teaching. Has your confidence to teach these subjects increased?
b) In what ways have you found that the strategies that you are using on the CD are affecting your
classroom teaching? Please use specific examples to discuss changes in how you structure science
activities, use questions, assess understanding,...
If there is something that you don't understand about thermal energy,
Ask us!
This is the end of this section.
