Siphons

Write in your journal Whenever you are instructed to "do an activity" throughout this workshop, please keep your notes on the activity in your journals.  We will ask to see your journals at the end of the workshop.

Make a siphon system using two large plastic bottles (about 2 liters each) and about a meter of plastic tubing. You may find it helpful to tie some small weights to the ends of the tubing. Fill one bottle with water and leave the other one empty. Start your siphon flowing and arrange your bottles and tube so that the water is flowing from the full bottle into the empty one.

When the system is flowing smoothly, predict when the flow will stop. Then observe the system to check your prediction. Draw two diagrams of your system: one when it is flowing, and the other showing its condition when flow ceases.

Determine what conditions are necessary to make the water flow in the opposite direction. Diagram and explain.

Consider these questions: The siphon is working

If you have any doubt about your conclusion, you could do the experiment. After all, this is supposed to be hands-on!
