Magnetic behavior of iron

Use several steel washers and one magnet to investigate whether a magnet can pass its magnetic characteristics onto other materials. Attach the washers in a line to the magnet, so that only one washer is in contact with the magnet, yet they all form a chain held together by magnetic attraction.

Use the compass to determine whether the washers have poles while they are in the chain.
Some related activities that you might like to do some day.

Make a "magnet sandwich" by placing a metal washer on each pole of a disk magnet. Use your fingers to sense how strongly paper clips stick to the magnet with and without the washers. Do the washers change the magnet's behavior in any way?
