Getting Up To Speed

Materials

Motion is what occurs when something changes its position. Distance (as an indication of position and change of position) and time are fundamental quantities that figure in any study of motion. From these we can determine the speed.
Average speed = distance traveled/time elapsed.
We call it "average speed" because it is a property of the whole trip, both the parts when you were speeding down the highway and the parts while you were stopped at the gas station. The car's speedometer tells us our speed for a short time interval, at the instant we look at it. When we measure distance in meters and time in seconds, the speed is given in meters per second (m/s).

To get an idea about speeds, determine how fast you walk, by timing yourself as you go a measured distance -- for example, 10 meters.
