Science

Why do science? This question should not be motivated by purely practical concerns. Science has intrinsic value: the joy of discovery and exploration, the revelation of new connections, and a fostering of an open, honest, and creative mind. Scientific values have a place in an enlightened and progressive society.

It is exciting and fulfilling to have an idea confirmed. The experimentalist strives to uncover the truth - to know where to find it and how to remove "extra" information while leaving the truth intact and manifest. The theorist elucidates the underlying principles, seeking either to predict or to explain physical phenomena.

Fascinations: the scale of the universe, million solar-mass black holes, quasars, supernovae, galactic collisions, the breakdown of spacetime, particle symmetries ...

Vegetarianism

I started along the vegetarian path by removing the more complex animals from my diet. In '91, I stopped eating pork. Pigs are considered to be more sentient than dogs. In '92, I phased out beef. A year or so later I stopped absorbing
chicken and fish life. In '95, I eliminated dairy products, although practically this was very difficult to do, since their use is so general.

How did I become vegetarian? Some vegetarian friends got me to think about what I was eating. It wasn't easy breaking my dietary habits. I wouldn't recommend going cold turkey. (Sorry about that pun!) A vegetarian diet can be very delicious and nutritious.

Tofu: Spring Creek organic nigari tofu. Freeze, defrost in micro, squeeze dry, crumble.
Veggie Burgers: Vegan Boca Burgers, Fantastic Foods Nature Burgers.
Milk substitute: Westbrae Natural WestSoy Plus plain. Organic, same calcium, vit D as milk, and tastes good.
Rice: Lundberg Black Japonica.
Vegetable oil: Hain's 100% Pure Expeller Pressed Canola Oil.
